This can come real handy at times. Another solution is to use Aviary Talon which works pretty well for taking screenshot of web pages.

Linux Workaround for ‘Argument list too long’ error message while removing all files from a directory

While someone deleting the files by using rm on the linux server, he might face this problem. There is a maximum number of files that can be passed as arguments to rm. So it does not allow you remove the files with ‘rm’ command.

Using rm to delete files is the easiest way adopted by linux users. Well, I see that if this does not work, there is a solution provided for this problem. As mentioned, there were around 72K files were generated in a folder which needed to be deleted. In the example, there are all the files starting with “Count”, so can be chosen using “Count*”.

Here is the output on command prompt.

root # rm Count*
/bin/rm: Argument list too long.

The workaround as given is: Use find to pipe all the matching files to rm, one at a time.

root # find . -name ‘Count*’ | xargs rm

And this can remove as many files as you want. Perfect!! Not yet…

The “find | xargs” solution doesn’t work on files with spaces.Now what to do? The only reliable way I could find is to use

find . -name ‘Count*’ -exec rm {} \;

but there’s a caveat: it will look for Count* in subdirectories as well, which may be undesireable. So in that case, -maxdepth 0 does the trick.

root # find . -maxdepth 0 -name ‘Count*’ -exec rm {} \;

I hope you got your trick now!!

Apparently, you can no longer transfer files on the latest version of Yahoo! Messenger unless both the parties are using the latest version. I had to login to Gaim to transfer the file I wanted to send to a friend. Is this weird or what!

More on Yahoo! Messenger:

Yahoo! Messenger is a popular instant messaging client and protocol provided by Yahoo!. Yahoo! Messenger is provided free of charge and can be downloaded and used with a generic “Yahoo! ID” which also allows access to other Yahoo! services, such as Yahoo! Mail, where users can be automatically notified when they receive new email. Yahoo instant messenger also includes a security feature which allows the user to be “invisible” to whoever they choose.

In addition to instant messaging features similar to those offered by ICQ and AOL Instant Messenger, it also offers some unique features such as: IMVironments (customizing the look of Instant Message windows) and Custom Status Messages. Another recently added feature is customized avatars.

Don’t you just hate the fact that Macromedia and Adobe have not ported most of their products to the Linux platform? I sure do. There is no decent alternative to Adobe Photoshop and Macromedia Dreamweaver. While I keep on looking for a non-GIMP solution to graphical applications, NVU seems to be developing into a great alternative for Macromedia Dreamweaver.

The company calls their product a “complete Web Authoring System for Linux Desktop users as well as Microsoft Windows and Macintosh users to rival programs like FrontPage and Dreamweaver.” they add “Nvu (pronounced N-view, for a “new view”) makes managing a web site a snap. Now anyone can create web pages and manage a website with no technical expertise or knowledge of HTML.”

I completely agree. It actually is quite a decent product and it is being continuously being developed! Check it out at the website and download it here. The software is completely open-source and you can even download the source to compile it yourself!

Something about OpenOffice:

OpenOffice.org is a free software / open source software office suite, including a word processor, spreadsheet, presentation, vector drawing, and database components. It is available for many different platforms, including Microsoft Windows, Unix-like systems including Solaris and Linux, and Mac OS X. It is intended to be compatible with, and compete with, Microsoft Office, it supports the OpenDocument standard for data interchange, and can be used at no cost.

OpenOffice.org is based on the codebase of StarOffice, an office suite developed by StarDivision acquired by Sun Microsystems in August 1999. The source code of the suite was released as an open source project in July 2000, with the aim of breaking the market dominance of Microsoft Office by providing a lower-cost, high-quality and open alternative. The source code for the application suite was previously available under two different software licenses: the LGPL and SISSL; from v2.0, it is only available under LGPL.

nLite – cut-down the size of your Windows CD, and more!

Hey, some of us are bothered about the existence of utilities we never use in windows. If you feel so too, this tool is for you. It is to be used on an existing Windows 2000/XP/2003 installer CD – it will aid you in removing the like of Windows Media Player, Windows Messenger, Outlook Express, and so on. Basically, it will de-integrate all the junk that should never have been part of windows. Then, when you install from the newly created “nLite”ened CD, you will have a squeaky clean windows.

Its possible to have a 160 MB windows XP installer, which when installed occupies 400 MB on the hard-disk. Amazing by any measure! Competing tools, like XPlite are not as good because of two reasons – the others aren’t free, and they are usable only *AFTER* installing WindowsXP – so you don’t have a clean setup to begin with.

nLite also assists you in slip-streaming (merging) the latest Service Pack into a supported version of a Windows CD. It also allows you to create basic unattended setups.

The really beautiful thing about it is, the levels of acceptance and usage it is seeing. Many home users, and lots more IT-pros use nLite to slim-down their install. In fact, if imitation and usage by the under-ground of the software audience is a measure of popularity, nLite has already climbed very high up that ladder – lots of warez sites host it, or bundle it along with downloads of unlicensed Windows XP CD-images, LOL.

It started out as a personal tool by an MSFN forums member {name – Dino Nuhagic (nuhi)}, after he collected enough info about eliminating components. Then, friends and members of MSFN encouraged him to develop the tool further. And now it has acquired a professional quality, but still is free.

Its clear that he’s not doing it for himself alone, anymore – would be nice if some people could donate (link to donate is on the home-page of the tool) to encourage him to continue the good work.
