It has to do with VFAT. You don’t have to know anything about this to try it. We’re going to trick your Windows 98 into thinking it’s a Network Server. Actually it’s not a trick, but a setting.

Right-Click the My Computer icon on the desktop, click Properties, click the Performance tab, click the File System tab, and under “Hard Disk”, change the setting “Typical Role of This Computer” from “Desktop Computer” to “Network Server”.

Click “Apply”, “Ok”

Re-boot.

What does it do? It utilizes 40 KB of RAM instead of the normal 10KB to cache the most recently accessed folders and files. For the extra 30 KB, it is well worth the effort.

Default search engine of Microsoft Internet explorer is MSN. But there are better search engines available. I like yahoo.com and you may have your own preference. Recently I came across article that indicated how to change the default search engine through registry. Open registry editor by going to START-RUN and entering regedit and navigate to following three keys separately and change it as shown below:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftInternet ExplorerMain]
“Search Page”=”http://www.google.com”
“Search Bar”=”http://www.google.com/ie”
[HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftInternet ExplorerSearchURL]
“”=”http://www.google.com/keyword/%s”
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftInternet ExplorerSearch]
“SearchAssistant”=”http://www.google.com/ie”

(This example is specific to google but there is a Microsoft article that I found on their support site which described show to do it for many other engines. Read all of it at: http://support.microsoft.com/directory/article.asp?ID=KB;EN-US;q198279)

If you have Clean Sweep Deluxe, It is recommended that you disable it before proceeding. Follow these directions to create a one-click shutdown shortcut:

Navigate to your desktop.
On the desktop, right-click and go to New, then to Shortcut (in other words, create a new shortcut).
You should now see a pop-up window instructing you to enter a command line path.
Enter one of these as the path:
Use this path if your operating system is Windows 95, 98, or Me:
C:windowsrundll.exe user.exe,exitwindows
Use this path if your operating system is XP:
SHUTDOWN -s -t 01
If the C: drive is not your local hard drive, then replace “C” with the correct letter of the hard drive.
Click the “Next” button.
Name the shortcut and click the “Finish” button.
Now whenever you want to shut down, just click on this shortcut and you’re done. Also, if you want to make life better and faster, you can right-click the new shortcut you just made, go to Properties, and type in X (or whatever letter) in the Shortcut Key box.
